The designation of “Sardina Pilchardus Walbauma”
The Moroccan and European sardine canning industries have met recently in Agadir in the framework of the International Committee of Sardina Pilchardus (ICSAP) to oppose the appellation of “sardine canning” for pelagic species caught in Peru, claiming that for ICSAP only SPW specie benefits from this designation, said the bulletin.
The vice-president of ICSAP, Majid Joundy believes that the introduction of new pelagic species under the appellation SPW may confuse consumers and change the position occupied currently by Morocco as a leader in the international market.
In 2002, the Moroccan sardine canning industry made a turnover of 2,2 billion on the export market. Sales in the European market are estimated at more than 45% against 35% in Africa.
