The government is to build three new fishery harbours on the Sultanate's northern coast.
The new harbours will be built at Seeb, Barka and Suwaiq, and form part of the government's plan to encourage a dynamic fisheries sector by creating the necessary infrastructure. This new harbours will add to a growing list of 12 fishing ports already constructed along the Sultanate's coast.
"The Ministry attaches great importance to the construction of fishery infrastructure, which provides services to fishermen and assists in the development of the sector," said Dr bin Khalfan al Akhzami told the Oman Observer.
"It facilitates the optimum utilisation of the country's fisheries resources in a sustainable manner. It also contributes to the diversification of national income sources."
Construction is also currently underway on a fishing jetty at Liwa in the Musandam Governorate which will be able to accommodate about 80 fishing boats and 10 multi-purpose vessels. A similar jetty is under construction at Al Ashkarah in the Sharquiyah region.
The Ministry has appointed Consulting Engineering Services LLC (CES) to undertake the engineering design of the new harbours for Seeb, Barka and Suwaiq.
