According to Spanish IT solutions and traceability firm, Appeyron, the fish and Iberian products sectors will encounter problems in complying with the EU's 178/2002 regulation which came into force at the start of January 2005 relating to traceability systems for the food industry. In terms of Iberian products, Appeyron has pointed out that there are more Iberian hams and Iberian pork shoulder cuts on sale in Spain than what is actually declared.

This means that these products will not have a traceability guarantee. The fishing sector's problem in compliance relates to the regulation 121/2004 in the identification of live, fresh, chilled and cooked fish, fish-farm and seafood products.
