In terms of foreign exchange earning, Oman's fish exports hovered around 30,000 tons, valuing OR 19mn (US$ 49.35mn) between 1989 and 1994. The fish exports have however fallen in terms of foreign exchange earnings, in 1996 and 1997. In 1996, the fall was 34.9% and in 1997, there was an additional reduction of 5.4%. Oman has experienced some problems in its fish exports to the EU because of the lack of relevant quality control measures. Also, the need for compliance with strict environmental standards, is increasingly felt by developed nations.
