According to Globefish, a unit in the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation Fisheries Department, production of fish oils in the top five producing countries, Norway, Iceland, Peru, Denmark and Chile, fell 12% to 570,000 tonnes in 2005.
While catches in Peru were around the same levels as 2004, a lower fat content led to a reduced production in oils. The only one of these countries which increased production was Iceland. In January 2006, the price of fish oil increased to over US$ 750 (EUR 629.12) per tonne. It is predicted by Globefish that there will be a further drop in the production of fish oil in 2006.
