Under construction, the new fish market hall at Laâyoune port, will be the biggest in Morocco. It will be standing on an area of 8.600 square meters and will constitue a global investment of 40 millions dirhams...
The realization of this project, introduced to the King Mohamed VI on Wesnesday, March 22nd 2006 during the inauguration of the port Laâyoune extension, came as a reaction to the important landings realized by artisanal and coastal fishing: a fact that places this port as the first ranked on a national basis, assuring 40% of the national production.
According to a document issued by the national fisheries authority (Office National des pêches, ONP), the concept of this work is founded on three basic principles: 1) a good handling of flows through establishing a seperation of the flows of products and people 2) a good control and maintenance of temperature: between 10 & 12 degrees to preserve quality for fish at areas reserved for sales operations 3) computerization of all trading processes (from landing to ultimate phase of saling)
Once operational, this new market hall, where seafood products will be commercialized, will respond to the most demanding quality rules and to the needs led by a sustained activity. It will also allow a better promotion of seafood products and will lead to a bigger dynamism within the regional socioeconomic structure.
The construction of this market hall is a part of the strategic orientation program for the period 2006 – 2010, worked out and implemented by ONP.
This program aims at constructing a new generation of market halls with a global budget of 102 millions of dirhams (more that 50% of the total budget) allocated to all markets around the kingdom.
