Morocco’s fishing agreement with the European Union, which was signed on July 28th, 2005 in Brussels was adopted by the Foreign Affairs Commission on Tuesday, December 19th , 2006 , after a two-hour-and-half of presentations and discussions.
Unanimously adopted, this new agreement states a decrease in the number of fishing vessels operating in Moroccan waters from practically 469 to 117 units. According to this agreement, the European fleet is reserved an annual fishing quota accounting for 60,000 tons of small pelagics in preset zones. In return, Morocco will get an annual compensation reaching 40 millions and 250 thousands Euros, which means a global amount of 161 millions Euros spread out over the four-year agreement.
