The Moroccan Institute for marine Research is carrying out in the northern Moroccan city of Nador, the experimental phase of a new technique that avoids the catch of marine mammals by fishing nets.
Produced and licensed by the Tunisian national institute of sea sciences and techniques, this technique apply the spreading of audio waves of some well defined frequency in water. These waves allow, through their acoustic effect, to keep marine mammals away from approaching the nets because of their high sensitivity to these frequencies. This technique can be used at low cost and is harmless both on mammlas and the ecological equilibrium.
