West African fishing nations have agreed a plan of action and co-operation to improve fisheries over the next eight years. The plan of strategic action 2002-2010 was adopted by the Sub-regional Fisheries Commission Co-ordination Committee (CSRP), which includes Mauritania, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Republic of Guinea and Sierra Leone. The nations also discussed proposals for allowing vessels to be extradited if they are sought in connection with fisheries offences in the waters of another member nation. Commenting on the plan of strategic action, the technical counsellor to Mauritanian fisheries minister, Sidna Ouled Cheikhna, said it was the perfect framework to sub-regional co-operation and would allow the CSRP to reach its objective of improving and developing the fishing sector. He added that the President of the Republic, Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya, put great importance on the sustainable and harmonious development of the sector as well as the development of sub-regional co-operation in this field.
