Morocco : 77mn euros to revamp coastal fishing in Morocco The Moroccan fisheries office (ONP) has earmarked MAD 779Mn, around 77 million euros, for the 2005-2009 period to upgrade the competitiveness and output of coastal and traditional fishing... The « Office National des Pêches » has made the investment to revamp fish marketing infrastructure and the modernisation of the sector's facilities and utilities. An ONP report said the monies will serve at building a new generation of fish markets, a network of sea food wholesale stores in Morocco and the development of fishing villages in the southern provinces, as well as hold training sessions for fishermen. The office is also contemplating to modernize the coastal fishing fleet and the creation of a guarantee fund and the restructuring of the traditional fishing sector in the southern provinces. The creation of an information network and the organization of a sea food distribution network and the development of traditional market and the exploration of new ones, as well as measures to help preserve sea resources are also slated on the agenda of the office. |
