BAHRAIN: Start of shrimps fishing season In the Kingdom of Bahrain the shrimps fishing season began in early July 2002 after four months of interruption that coincides with the annual period of prohibition of fishing prescribed by the Directorate of Fisheries in order to preserve the stock. A total of 300 fishing boats have been allowed to work during this season. On the other hand, the total amount of shrimps in the 2001 season neared 1359 metric tons, a value of $ 2.5 million, while in the 2000 season this amount was close to 2104 metric tons, a value of $8 million. As for shrimps exports, they amounted to 699 metric tons, a value of $0.83 million while imports amounted to 146 metric tons, a value of $0.3 million. The Directorate of Fisheries has issued a decision about fishing nets specifications for shrimps used during this season, providing that the length of the net should not exceed 18 meters and the mesh 38 millimeters with special technical requirements for the iron, the wood and the cords used in the nets. |
