Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia has temporarily stopped all seafood exports to the European Union following threats of a total ban after checks on local fisheries revealed lacking health standards. Malaysian health minister Liow Tiong Lai said local health authorities would spend the next six weeks inspecting and improving the health standards of fishery companies exporting seafood to the EU in order to avoid a total ban.

On Wednesday, June 11th, 2008, at the headquarter of his ministry, Mr. Aziz Akhennouch, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Fisheries, together with Amb. Ali Mchumo, Director General of Common Fund for Commodities, and Mr. Grimur Valdimarsson, Director of Fish Products and Industry Division, FAO have officially launched the Regional Project on Fisheries Technical Assistance:
“For a sustainable development of small-scale fisheries in the Arab region”, funded by CFC, and budgeted around $1.5 million dollars.
